How a tattoo looks in a year is decided in the first three weeks. Before you get up, the artist wraps the piece and walks through the actual routine out loud: how long to keep it covered, how to wash it, what to put on it and how little, and what a normal peeling stage looks like so you do not panic at day five. Sun and soaking are the two things that undo good work fastest.
Once the piece is fully healed, come back and let the artist look at it. Some spots take ink unevenly no matter how well the session went, and a short touch-up sitting evens out a line or a patch of shading. Bring it in rather than living with it, and keep the studio in the loop if anything about the healing looks off.
